But when authorities could not find her son – he had fled the country and was never convicted of the crime – it was she who became a target for vengeance. Robert Redford’s “The Conspirator” tells the largely forgotten story of Mary Surratt, whose son John is accused of being part of the plot that killed Abraham Lincoln. This film could have landed with a thud, but Fukunaga gives “Jane Eyre” new life. Judi Dench as a kindly but talkative housekeeper, Sally Hawkins as the nasty aunt and Imogen Poots as a pretty rich girl trying to put Jane in her place head a strong supporting cast. Meanwhile, Fassbender brings a charm and pathos to his role, giving you more of a glimpse of his humanity than in other adaptations. Instead with her tightly parted hair and often furrowed brow, she embodies a woman trying to break out of the limitations placed on her in Victorian times. Wasikowska seems perfect for the role, not played up as a beauty as in some films. Nevertheless, it is enough to give you a sense of the Dickensian civilized cruelness often associated with the era and Jane’s ultimate determination.

Her earlier life then unfolds in a series of flashbacks that compress much of the early pages of the book to a few scenes. She is taken in and nursed back to health by a young clergyman (Jamie Bell) and his two sisters (Holliday Grainger and Tamzin Merchant). Unlike the novel, when we meet Jane, she is in a desperate flight across the bleak landscape and haunted by a wind-borne voice. Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland” and “The Kids Are All Right”) stars as Jane, the struggling governess, and Michael Fassbender (“X-Men: First Class” and “Inglourious Basterds”) is the brooding Rochester. It is a hybrid, capturing both the spirit of the novel and the emotional appeal that makes it continue to resonate with modern fans.

The latest version from Cary Joji Fukunaga (“Sin Nombre”), from an intelligent and lively script by Moira Buffini (the funny, offbeat “Tamara Drewe”), is one of the best adaptations of books about the 19th century heroine to come around. Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre” has fascinated readers since it was published in 1847.Ī combination of gothic love – repressed and smoldering – and the story of a “small and plain” young woman with the heart of a lioness – the novel has been made into film more than 20 times over the years.
